How to Fix Excel File Hang

Microsoft Excel is a part of the Microsoft Office suite created by Microsoft that is the world's most popular spreadsheet software. Right now it is available for Windows, MacOS, Android and iOS. Its popularity grew due to its extensive features for formula and calculation, graphing and charts, pivot tables, and Visual Basic for Applications or VBA.

Microsoft Excel commonly used file extensions are .xls and .xlsx. This files normally range from 10 kilobytes but can grow as big as 6 megabytes or more. A common troubleshooting step if a user complains that the Microsoft Excel program is running very slow is checking if they encounter the slowdown on just one file. Knowing this beforehand and doing advance steps would save time. Excel programs can open many files simultaneously, the the user might be to workaholic to open up to 20 excel sheets! This will really cause problem in the smoothness of using Excel since opening a lot of sheets would take up a lot of memory. Considering that the memory of the computer is low, you can upgrade the memory to a higher one. Upgrading to perhaps 4Gb to 8Gb of RAM could boost the performance, but bottlenecks exist, so make sure the computer follows the right upgrade path. Also, the system should support it (ex. 32 bit vs 64 bit systems).

Some users tend to make the excel file their own database. Sheets could be added from time to time. As the size of the excel file increase, the performance will certainly gets affected. Advise the user to create another file for next records. You can easily create new excel sheet with the basic details from existing sheets by clicking the sheet tab, then select Move/ Copy and select New workbook.

But if the program has event log entries, investigate on the error. The error message gives the nature of the error. From the events, you could track the issue. One cause of performance issue of Microsoft Excel can be due to Add-ons. Try to disable Add-ons and do isolation test. If the program is now back to its normal response, then you have identified the add-on causing the slowdown.
